Correct Answer: 1- inadequately immobilized.
Clavicle fractures have historically been treated non-operatively. The patient had the involved upper extremity placed in a sling for comfort, and was temporarily immobilized until pain was controlled. Rigid immobilization for these fractures was not necessary. There is now an increased propensity to treat these fractures with ORIF. Clavicle fractures that require ORIF include open fractures, clavicle fractures associated with a floating shoulder, fractures with a neurovascular injury, polytraumatized patients with multiple fractures, fractures with tenting of the skin, and fractures with a z-fragment. All of the choices are associated with a higher incidence of non-union when treating a clavicle fracture non-operatively except for inadequate immobilization.
